At Back Cove Equine, we offer a variety of services to care for your horse. We know that caring for horses requires a special understanding of their biology and behavior, and we want you to know that our team is highly trained and experienced when it comes to equine patients. We provide a variety of services for horses, ranging from routine and preventative care to emergency services.
We offer routine examinations of your animal, including annual wellness exams, lameness exams, sick animal exams, exams for health certificates for travel, and much more.
We believe the best way to promote overall health is through preventative care. Regular checkups allow us to establish a baseline in your horse's health and make us aware of any changes that may indicate future problems. Health problems that go undetected can become more serious issues when left untreated, so checkups are important even when your horse appears healthy. We offer tailored vaccine programs for you and your individual animals, Coggins testing, health certificates, and micro-chipping.
Spinal Manipulation (also known as 'Chiropractic')
Dr. Flaherty recently completed her spinal manipulation training at the Integrative Veterinary Medical Institute in Reddick, Florida and has earned her CVMMP certification (Certified Veterinary Medical Manipulation Practitioner). She is happy to now be offering these services to her clients. Spinal manipulation improves horses' motion, comfort, blood flow, neurologic function, and helps promote overall health. We're having fun providing this service, and the horses are enjoying it!
We are proud to offer equine dentistry and provide care for your horse's entire oral cavity. A horse's teeth and jaw function are vital to their overall well being, so dental care is an important part of your horse's health. We provide routine equine dental floating, oral examinations, and dental radiography (xrays). Our oral exams are generally performed under sedation, with an oral speculum, light, and headstand so that we can fully evaluate your animal's mouth and address any abnormalities found.
We know that emergencies happen and usually at the worst time. Don’t worry! We are here for you no matter what time it is. It is our goal to get your horse feeling better as quickly as possible, and we will do everything we can to help. We are part of a group of local veterinarians who share on-call/emergency coverage after-hours so that there is always a veterinarian available to see your animal 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. If you have an emergency, call the main number, (207) 370-1645, and you will be directed to the doctor on call. After your horse is examined, we will go over options for diagnosing and treating your horse so that he or she can get back to normal quickly.
